Sounding brass, tinkling cymbals…

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. – 1 Corinthians 13:1

My grandmother used to say, ‘You making a whole lotta noise but you ain’t saying nothing girl’, and I would roll my eyes and think that she was foolish or without understanding. Now that I am grown I realize that my Gran was as wise as she could be for that time; as church folk we are used to making noise, but when that noise overrides the love that we are to show our brothers and sisters it becomes of none effect. This is a scripture that I love to share with others:

But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart. – 1 Sam. 16:7

Why do you think that God looks on the heart? Why not the eyes? They are purported to be the windows to the soul, correct? God looks on the heart because He loves us and God Himself is Love. Paul even tells us in 1 Corinthians about Faith, Hope and Charity and he says that the greatest of these is Charity (or love). Probably the first scriptures that we learned after the 23rd Psalms was John 3:16, For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son… and then there is 1 John 4:19, We love him, because he first loved us.
